Raising a reader
A little, every day
Make a little time to read together each day, at bedtime or whenever suits your family.
Let them choose
Children read more when the book is theirs. Comics, picture books and the same story for the hundredth time all count.
Talk as you read
Point at the pictures, ask what might happen next, and laugh at the funny bits. Stories are for talking about.
Read in your languages
Tell and read stories in any language your family speaks. It all builds a reader.
Keep books within reach
A low shelf or a basket by the bed. If they can reach books, they will pick them up.
Let them see you read
Children copy what grown-ups do. Your reading is the best advert there is.
Give a child a gift card
Let them choose their own book. Birthdays, prizes and end of term.
Stock a children's library
Help fill shelves in the schools and communities COAL works with.
For schools
Ask about class sets, library books and a quote for your school.
Keeping children safe matters to us. We never publish children's full names, and we only share photos of children with a parent's permission. Read COAL's safeguarding policy.
